Sondre asked:

I need anti-virus for my new laptop . Anti virus for best possible protection and which wouldn’t slow down my laptop and with real time protection . I had free AVG on my other PC,i used to think it was good, because it never found anything, but when my PC got really slow i installed McaFee,and it found viruse that AVG didn’t . Plus AVG slows down computer,so it makes it unusable while its scanning . So i need something much much better than AVG free . Read online reviews about Kaspersky anti virus, sounded good ,but can’t really trust these reviews on line because they are most likely just Affiliates . Which anti virus would you recommend and why ?
Thank you .

i’m using avast home edition . The new version has been released on their website. It s a freeware. You can register yourself on the avast website to recive the registration key . They provide timely updates (small in size, ie. In kb’s. Which s usefull for people with limited internet plans ). It s fully legal n it generates a virus recovery database to report avast about the new viruses .
To detect n delete malwares on your comp use malware bytes . Another free software . N a powerfull tool to clean your comp of malwares. I use these softwares myself .

Each anti virus program is a little different from the others. That’s why McAfee picked up some things AVG did not pick up. If you look around, there are free or low cost anti virus programs that pick up things McAfee doesn’t pick up. That’s why there are so many products.

If I were you I’d stick with AVG. Or go to Avira AntiVir Personal (free). If you are impressed with McAfee, use them. These are all good programs that do good jobs. None of them are perfect.

Every once in a while you need to run programs that clean up stuff your computer accumulates day to day. This is inevitable. Use programs like ccleaner.com or smartdefrag.com every week or two. There are other, similar programs out there at no cost or low cost.

You have to do occasional maintenance. No one program does everything. Use a few (but not too many because ‘too many’ can cause conflicts).

lol at some of the responses.

    Terms:
Malware – malicious software (viruses, worms, rootkits, spyware, adware, greyware, etc)
Active scanner – means the software is able to detect and remove malware while it is running in the background.

I would never trust Microsoft to protect my computer from Malware. Their previous products have proven to be ineffective.
Norton and Mcafee have proven through the years that they are unreliable, bloated (does too many unnecessary things using up your system resources) and very difficult to remove. They also cause incompatibility problems.

A lot of people will tell you to get free antivirus programs like Avast. While good for being free, they don’t detect as much malware as the commercial products. They don’t work as well either. Antivirus is serious and really needs a professional commercial product.
Anti-spyware/adware though, is less serious. There are plenty of free software out there that works well enough here.

When I set up my father’s computer, this is what I used.

Main anti-virus: Nod32 (paid subscription, active scanner)
Main anti-spyware/adware: Super Antispyware (free, active scanner)
Secondary anti-virus and anti-spyware/adware: Malwarebytes anti-malware (free, no active scanner)

You can find any of these by googling them.

Kaspersky is probably the most powerful and it doesn’t decrease your performance much.
Right now I am using NOD32 v4 and that works very well, still Kaspersky is something else
and the reason you asked for, well … I used a trial once and one of my friends is a CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) and he always suggests KAV (Kaspersky Anti Virus) and KIS (Kaspersky Internet Security). Thus, for the anti virus part, KAV is recommended.

    Hi,

If wan to purchase,Kaspersky is good. But new version of Avira premium security suite 9 is even better. It has very high detection rates than kaspersky..Click this link to see it.

It also has a very lite engine which won’t slow your PC.

Other good ones are Eset smart security and Avast pro.

I use these free software and never had a problem with my pc.You should try it.

Use this freeware to speed up your pc

    Peace…..

I changed to Avast a few months ago, I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Personally I like Avira its home edition is free and it’s way easier on resources than Norton or McAfee. Or you could switch to a Linux based OS like Ubuntu (very user friendly these days) then the only reason that you would need an antivirus is so that you don’t infect recipients of your emails that are using windows. The OS isn’t hack proof but it is more secure and unless you are fond of video games that are only available on Windows or via console systems like PS3, xBox etc… and don’t have a console then it’s the choice I would make. You can also setup a dual boot windows, Linux system pretty easy too. If I wasn’t into all the video games I would have trashed windows a long time ago. As for Linux software there is so much OpenSource and free apps that you needn’t pay anything more for your system than the hardware. However donating to the developers of the software is something I recommend and would do too if I wasn’t broke. lol
